Sustainability statement

I am keen to play my part in tackling environmental issues like pollution and the climate crisis through adopting better practices in my business activities. This is very much a work-in-progress for me, as I learn more about the ways in which I can reduce my impact on the environment and support others in my community.

Website

This website has been designed and built by Two Sparrows Ltd with sustainability in mind. Using the Website Carbon Calculator, an estimation of the amount of carbon emissions that are attributed to the use of this website is calculated, and design and coding decisions have been made to reduce these emissions where possible.*

Energy use

  • Work from a co-working space with shared utilities, rather than a stand-alone office.
  • Use energy-efficient equipment and appliances or switch to energy-efficient alternatives where possible.

Stationery

  • Reuse stationery, binders and folders when they’re available.
  • Using less paper and printing smarter on recycled paper and refillable ink cartridges where possible.
  • Only print when necessary, printing documents two-sided, and using unwanted paper for notes.

Recycling

  • Adopt a Reduce – Reuse – Recycle mindset and approach in day-to-day business.
  • Using the correct bins for returnable bottles, non-returnable bottles, aluminium cans, paper, and food scraps.
  • Recycling or disposing of e-waste via retailer return schemes or community recycling centres instead of in a landfill.

Transport and travel

  • Flexible working or working from home.
  • Offering remote video conferencing options for training and workshops facilitation
  • Driving an energy efficient hybrid vehicle.
  • Taking public transport to work where practicable.
  • Reduce air travel and, whilst it can come with different costs, using carbon offsets where available.

Donations and Social Responsibility

  • I currently support a national charity that advocates and assists families experiencing poverty.
  • I am currently on the board of an organisation that supports independent living for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.

* This website is hosted on a New Zealand-based server that is not currently listed with The Green Web Foundation, which is used by the Carbon Calculator to check whether the host is using green energy. Our host does however use solar panels at their data centre that enables them to run almost entirely off-grid. Their panels offset around 24,000 tonnes of carbon each year. If the host registered with The Green Web Foundation, each page of this website would be rated 9% better than the rating currently calculated.
